White Water Safety (WWS)

The Paddle UK White Water Safety course has been designed for kayakers, canoeists and stand-up paddle boarders a like to teach you current, simple and effective solutions to common problems that could happen on the river. But most importantly give you strategies for how to avoid them.
We believe that this is the most essential course for all white water paddlers, whether in canoes, kayaks or SUPs.
Over the 2 days, we will develop your confidence, skills, basic leadership and rescue strategies allowing you to keep both yourself and group members safe of Grade 2(3).
The venues we used are tried and tested allowing you to get the most from the course, without be overwhelmed.
We will cover:

Advantages and disadvantages of different safety equipment.

White water swimming.
-
Bank and boat based rescue of swimmers and equipment.

Safe and appropriate use of throwlines
Safe strategies to help trapped swimmers. -
Evaluation of stoppers and getting equipment or swimmers out of them.

Features of chest harnesses and use of live bait techniques.

Using mechanical advantage to retrieve equipment.
-
Wading strategies.
-
Safe group paddling strategies.
We will be spending most of the day on and in the water, so you do need to be prepared to get wet whilst having fun, experimenting and problem solving loads of different possible rescue scenarios.
Remember this is a training course not and assessment so there’s no pressure and you can try out any ideas and ask any question you may have.

A suitable Whitewater Craft( Kayak, Canoe or SUP)

Suitable clothing for spending the day in and out of the water we recommend a dry suit with lots of thermal layers.

Whitewater Paddle

Whitewater Buoyancy Aid (preferably with a rescue harness)

Suitable footwear (trainers or wet shoes) no hiking boots

Layers of warm clothing
