Grade 2/3 Whitewater Canoe Progression Course

whitewater canoe coaching Grade 2 river UK

Develop confident, controlled whitewater canoe skills — beyond simply getting down Grade 2/3.

This course is designed for open canoe paddlers who want to properly understand what the water is doing and learn how to work with it rather than fight against it.
If you're comfortable on Grade 2 but start to feel out of control as the water becomes more dynamic, we focus on developing the core skills that improve boat control, refine trim and edge use, and support deliberate decision making on the river.
This isn’t about simply getting down and surviving the river. It’s about building the competence and judgement that allow you to paddle moving water with confidence and control.

Who This Course Is For

This course is aimed at canoe paddlers who:

  • Are comfortable on Grade 2 and looking to step confidently towards Grade 3

  • Want to refine boat control, trim, and river reading so the boat works with the water more effectively

  • Recognise that strong fundamentals are key to better performance

  • Value technical coaching over quick fixes

It is particularly suited to paddlers who are serious about long-term development in whitewater canoe.

What You’ll Develop

Across the course we focus on the core skills that underpin effective whitewater canoeing, including:

  • Understanding how whitewater features behave

  • Developing reliable canoe control on moving water

  • Improving and consistently hitting your chosen line

  • Managing trim, angle, and boat speed to work effectively in dynamic flow

  • Building the ability to read and react effectively to the river

  • Staying in control on more dynamic rapids

How We Coach

Sessions are delivered in small groups of up to 1:6 (maximum 6 paddlers) and led by a highly experienced advanced whitewater canoe coach, allowing for clear feedback and strong individual progression.

Sessions focus on:

  • Strong technical foundations

  • Progressive skill development through deliberate practice

  • Clear, timely feedback on the river

  • Understanding how the water influences your decision-making

Many paddlers go on to continue their progression through our Bespoke Coaching sessions after completing this course.
